How Electricity Flows: From Wholesale to Retail

Twenty-four hours a day, ISO New England directs the production and flow of power across the region’s high-voltage transmission network to continuously balance the electricity needs of consumers with the least costly sources of electricity available. Reliability is our number one priority.

The ISO neither owns nor operates the power plants or transmission lines. This independence allows us to ensure fair access to grid service for all entities buying, selling, and transporting electricity.
