In January 2018, ISO New England published an operational analysis of fuel-security challenges to the continued reliability of New England’s power system and opened a dialogue with stakeholders on the issue. The study illustrated the number and duration of energy shortfalls that could occur during the winter period in 2024/2025 if certain conditions developed, which would require implementation of emergency procedures to maintain reliability. The purpose of the operational fuel-security analysis was to examine how anticipated generating resource and fuel-mix combinations in the future could affect reliable operation of the regional bulk power system during an entire winter period (December 1 through February 28). Quantifying the potential shortfalls over a wide range of possible combinations provided information the region used to consider approaches to ensuring power system reliability in light of evolving industry trends.
The Operational Fuel-Security Analysis is just one of several key projects at the ISO. The ISO continuously undertakes a variety of short- and long-term projects to enhance the region’s competitive wholesale electricity markets and ensure reliable operation of the power grid.
