Today, as a preventative measure for the expected duration of the current cold weather conditions related to Winter Storm FERN, the ISO submitted a request to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for an order pursuant to Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. Section 202 (c) provisions are long-standing measures that allow the Department of Energy, in limited emergency situations, to temporarily waive certain state and federal requirements so that power generators can operate, when normally they would not be allowed to do so.
The DOE issued an order granting the ISO’s request this morning. The order will allow the ISO to maximize the availability of all the generating resources in the New England region if needed.
Designated Entities seeking authorization to operate under the DOE order should contact the ISO Control Room, and further instructions will be provided.
