New England is unquestionably on a path to a clean-energy future. Over the past 20 years, competitive wholesale electricity markets combined with state emission-reduction regulations and policies have driven a dramatic transition of the region’s power fleet to cleaner, more efficient energy resources. To achieve clean-energy goals going forward, the states are expanding their energy and environmental laws to reduce carbon emissions across the economy, which will set in motion extensive electrification of the transportation and heating sectors. This transformation of the economy to run on a clean power system leaves the region with two major questions: What will we need in the decades to come to run the grid reliably and how do we get to that future state from here?
ISO New England is engaging with market participants and state entities, including the New England States Committee on Electricity (NESCOE), to assess the future of the regional power system in light of state energy and environmental laws and to explore potential pathways forward to ensuring a reliable, efficient, and sustainable clean-energy grid.
Work on this initiative follows two tracks taking place within the stakeholder process since 2020:
Remaining reliability and market study work from both FGRS Phase 2 and Pathways to the Future Grid is being completed via the Economic Planning for the Clean Energy Transition (EPCET) Pilot Study.
New England’s Future Grid Initiative is just one of several key projects at the ISO, which continuously undertakes a variety of short- and long-term projects to enhance the region's competitive wholesale electricity markets and ensure reliable operation of the power grid.
